Honoring Bintou Coulibaly: A Legacy of Compassionate Care and Empowerment for Women in Rural Mali
Bintou Coulibaly was not just a midwife—she was a beacon of hope, strength, and love for countless women in Sikasso and the rural communities of Mali. As a dedicated wife, mother of four, and healthcare provider, she devoted her life to helping mothers and families through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Through her work, she not only delivered babies but also nurtured entire communities, becoming a trusted and beloved figure in the region.
For decades, Bintou worked tirelessly to provide quality healthcare in places where access was limited. In the rural areas where clinics and hospitals were far away, and maternal healthcare was often nonexistent, Bintou was a lifeline. She traveled long distances, often on foot or by motorbike, to reach women who were in need of prenatal care, safe deliveries, and postnatal support. Her commitment went far beyond her job as a midwife—it was her mission to ensure that every mother, no matter how isolated or impoverished, had access to the care and support she needed.
Bintou’s work was not without challenges. In rural Mali, women face significant barriers to healthcare. Long distances, poor infrastructure, and a lack of medical resources mean that many women give birth without any professional assistance, leading to high maternal and infant mortality rates. Bintou dedicated her life to changing this. She educated women about their health, encouraged them to seek prenatal care, and provided them with safe deliveries. She became more than just a healthcare provider—she was a guide, a mentor, and an advocate for women’s rights to safe, dignified healthcare.
As her child, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices she made and the incredible impact she had on the lives of so many. My mother’s work didn’t end when she left the clinic or finished delivering a baby. She continued to counsel women in their homes, advocate for better healthcare in the community, and mentor younger midwives who followed in her footsteps. Through her efforts, Bintou helped to reduce maternal deaths, improve birth outcomes, and bring hope to families in Sikasso and beyond.
Now, in honor of her memory and to continue the vital work she started, I am committed to building Bintou’s Clinic, a healthcare facility dedicated to serving the women of rural Mali. This clinic will be a place where women can receive the comprehensive, compassionate care that my mother provided throughout her life. It will offer prenatal and postnatal services, safe deliveries, family planning, and health education, ensuring that women have the support they need during pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.
Bintou’s Clinic will be more than just a tribute to my mother—it will be a continuation of her spirit, her passion, and her legacy of service. It will be a place where women feel safe, respected, and empowered. It will provide critical healthcare in an area where it is most needed, reducing the distance women have to travel to access medical care and ensuring that no woman is left to face the dangers of childbirth alone.
The clinic will also focus on training and empowering local women to become healthcare providers, much like my mother did. By offering training programs for midwives and healthcare workers, we will ensure that Bintou’s legacy continues to live on through the next generation of women who will care for their communities, just as she did.
However, I cannot do this alone. To bring this dream to life, I am reaching out to friends, family, and the broader community to ask for your support. Whether through donations, partnerships, or simply spreading the word, your help is crucial in building a facility that will provide life-saving care to women and families in rural Mali.
